Hi, I am a complete novice at cycling recently had a gastric bypass and am now trying to make up for the time I have lost enjoying myself. I am interested in finding a cycling weekend in the UK which would be suitable for myself and a friend who is just as much a novice as myself. Does anybody have any ideas for me. Thanks

Probably the closest thing for now would be to find a local cycle club and see what they offer. Most clubs seem to offer weekend rides for varying abilities.

How about trying a few charity bike rides? The one that happens in my area every year always has 3 routes, a 10 mile, 20 mile and a 30 mile. This year, they hope to add a 45 mile ride to the list. This way, they have a route for all riders of all abilities. I'm sure many other charity bike rides are organised in the same way. I hope to do the 45 miles this year .

I know it isn't a cycling weekend, but may be of use.

Do you have any friends who cycle? Maybe you can organise a long weekend of camping/cycling.

I forgot to mention, congratulations on the new life style and I hope it works out well for you and you continue to get healthier.

You could check out the sustrans routes, put your bikes on the train/car, book accommodation. That would give you pretty gentle rides away from traffic (mostly). Worth making sure your bikes are in good order before you go, and finding out where the nearest bike shops are in case of problems.

First, choose where you want to have your cycling weekend. I'd suggest that you pick somewhere with plenty of quiet, flat roads and some nice scenery. Hint: don't choose West Yorkshire - we have lots of nice scenery and some quiet roads, but the quiet ones are usually very hilly and the flat ones very busy!

What part of the country are you in? How far do you want to travel to go on this cycling weekend? Will you be driving or going by train? Will you take your own bikes or hire when you get there?

If you want some support, I'm sure that you could get a few CycleChatters to meet up with you and show you round their area.

Don't get me wrong - there is some fine cycling round here, as long as you like this kind of thing...

I think I need to move to a different part of the country as I don't get any faster up these here hills and like you say the flat routes ( apart from the canals and cycle ways )are too busy .

Am still looking out for a flatish ride as would like to come out but am too slow on the hills.

Charity cycling challenges can be good, as said, they tend to do rides for all abilities. nip onto the BHF (British Heart Foundation) or AMR (Action Medical Research) website.

Rides in the Suffolk area are flat as a pancake and great for beginners, if you want to map out a route for a weekend there. Also contact Sustrans for routes in that area.
