cycling topless

yes, I am a man. Bought my first bike today (hoy shizuoka 001 hybrid) and cycled it home about 8 miles by canal towpath. It was great, but quite warm (I am not a regular exerciser except walking). So since its the canal towpath I took off my t shirt and that was more comfortable. Why don't more cyclists do this (off road at least)? Guess if you come off it could do more damage. Planning to commute and want to keep cool so I don't. Arrive at work too sweaty and this seems like the natural thing to do. Although I would get the tshirt back on when I have to rejoin the road - I can understand its not a great look at the lights and I am no Adonis.

For me, theres nothing much worse than seeing a bloke cycling topless - I don't care how fit he is!

You'll be cold enough with just the T-shirt on whilst cycling. No need to worry about staying cool.

There are only 2 acceptable ways to dress on a bike, fully clothed or naked. No intermediates are acceptable.
Even naked doesn't look too great to be honest.
O.P. as @classic33 says you would be surprised how much the wind chill cools you down, I can be riding in near 30c temps and I am quite happy on the bike with up to two layers (though above 23-24 it tends to be just one), or bibs and a t-shirt skullcap for sweat, and it's only when you stop you notice the temps, besides I don't think temps are going to be an issue now till next May or so.
