Bad luck David. I don't think they were BSing you, in my experience a lot of employers don't give any feedback, so I would take it at face value. In today's situation even getting an interview is an achievement, and it sounds like you did interview well.

Well thanks for all the messages of encouragement I've woken up feeling a bit better and went to look at some decorating for a lettings agency yesterday which may lead to repeat work.
I just thought it unlikely they had managed to find an actual non-retired traditional ironmonger in London. I've had a bit too much time on my hands lately.

Related to this subject; Could you go to the interview on the bus/taxi, then cycle there when you got the job. I dont hold a driving license but I do have a job interview coming up and someone will probably take me, so I was wondering if it would be acceptable to turn up in a sweaty mess after you have presented yourself so well in the interview. (There ar very few cyclist in my area and the interview is only 5 miles away).

Unless you need to be well turned out for your job (meeting customers/managers/etc) then as long as you are there on time and able to work as normal, I can't see why it should be a problem.

I've always travelled by car/bus etc to interviews. Then usually drive the first day or two until I suss out bike parking, disabled loos (changing rooms - where ?) then start cycling in.

Better luck next time - I would see both emails as encouraging !

In some people eye's cyclist equals oddball, might just go against you in an interview. As an employer I would say it would not set me against you, however I am a cyclist.

Quite

I remember one interview descended into an argument about punctuality and how would I get to work on a [SNEER]bicycle[/SNEER] if it were snowing.

The simple fact that in the job I had at the time, if it snowed the only issue was me shivering outside waiting for late drivers with keys to arive and open up didn't seem to be of relevance to my interviewer who just kept repeating the question with varying depths of snow getting to the point where only a tank or half-track owner would qualify for the position

After a while I just thought "sod it, he's made his decision" and just argued back

As it turned out, I'm glad i didn't get the job, it would have been a completely different career path

I remember one interview descended into an argument about punctuality and how would I get to work on a [SNEER]bicycle[/SNEER] if it were snowing.

I had a senior manager who was deeply amused and in awe that I managed to travel in the snow in late Nov 2010/early Dec 2010 which included upto 15 inches on side roads and 6-8 inches on the most of the main roads apart from Abbeydale Road. I think he might have been a MTBer though in the past.

I think if they want to argue about punctuality they will do. I had this last year at an interview where they were droning on about getting in for work starting at 9am when at the time I was doing some 5am starts and they kept on saying yeah but we need you in for 9am, is this gonna be a problem?
