Do some cycle training:

It's usually free and arranged through your local Council. The instructors take you out on the road and help you with positioning, tips and training to keep you safe. It proved invaluable to me when I first started as well as reading the commuting guide on here.

ETA: I presume that other councils rather than just London boroughs do this as I see you are located in Cheshire!

Councils ......mmmm....... now let me think. Our council have set up a cycle route and its fantastic, but the problem being is that to get on it you need to ride around 4 miles of congested, grid-locked mad roads. When you get on it its 4 miles of pleasure as its wide and fast, but it goes from nowhere to nowhere but makes the council look like a caring tree hugging body that I should vote for. Its a waste of money and I can see some cyclists having nasty accidents getting to it. It is however a pointless piece of infrastructure however good it is.

Ive just put my bell back on my road bike as I dislike making people jump when I call out that I am behind them . With the darker evenings I think its a politer way to let them know I am there .
