Hi All

I need some cycling shoes, using trainers at the moment and they need replacing.

Its for my road bike and i have the pedals that you put your feet in a plastic thingy (not sure the exact name for these pedals).

My budget is £50, what would you recommend.

Thanks

toe clips? like a cage for the end of your shoe?

not sure I'd bother buying cycle shoes if you've got them

the next step is clipless pedals but you're not going to manage shoes, pedals and cleats for £50 I'm afraid, no brainer upgrade if you can stretch to it

M520 pedals here

And I just ordered some dhb R1 cycling shoes off Wiggle.
Using the £5 off voucher they came to a smidgen over £30. I couldn't really justify spending big mulah on shoes.
While I'm not expecting the world from them, they came with good reviews, and other dhb stuff I've bought has been great value, so I think I'll be pleasantly suprised

All that's under £50!

Merlin Cycles are doing Shimano 520 spds and shimano m31 spd shoes for £49.95 the lot here: http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/?fn=product&productId=1079&categoryId=136

Don't know about the quality though!

The difference between trainers and proper cycle shoes is the cycle shoes will have a stiff sole.

I wore Sidi touring for years with toe clips. They had not got threaded holes for SPD, just a plain ridged panel.

If your budget it £50 at the moment and you have toe clips. Keep the clips and buy £50 road shoes that should have Time or Look cleats.

While you use toe clips, fit these:-

http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/productdetail.asp?productcatalogue=SHIMPEDZ500000000000

and saw a slot across them for the rear rail of your pedal cage.

You may have to fill the underside with epoxy resin to strengthen them before you saw.

When you have cash enough for pedals and proper cleats, you will have the shoes.

Just on point, the OP may want to stay with toe clips. I've met quite a lot of people recently who are very resistant to clipless. I think what pinkkaz has found is a bargain.

Depends on the OP's bike. A pukka road bike will want pukka road shoes.
A sports tourer will prefer the Shimano shoes Pinkkaz suggests.

A really old pukka road bike will not want Look, Time or Shimano clipless.
I would not dream of taking the rat-traps off my Pug.

If the OP's bike is historic, it might be better to keep the clips for authenticity.

The trouble with retaining authenticity is finding shoes. Search the net.

I am one of those who marinyork calls resistant to clipless. I have beeen on toeclips since the mid eighties. I had clipless, spds, on my best bike for six months last year and hated them. I also didn't get any advantage from using them and I was glad to go back to toeclips. I woulden't put clipless on the fixed I use for general running around, I would not want to lose the flexibility of being able to wear what shoes I want. I might try cliplesss again on my best bike, but a different make, just in case it was the spd's themselves. But for now I will continue to use cycle shoes and toeclips on the club runs.

I called in at Aldi just before christmas & they still had a couple of pairs left, size 9 & 10, not sure of price, but IIRC they were about £20
