I think Shimano shoes come up a little small. I am an 8-9, but had to go to a 44 wide in the R088

If you decide to get Specialized shoes just go a size bigger than you normally wear and they should be fine. I have some of the Body Geometry SPD ones and had them for two years and they are still nearly as good as new. Great shoes, really comfortable.

I love to be clipped in and having Shimano multi release cleats (SM-SH56) I have never felt like I could unclip in an emergency.

It's hard to tell if they make a huge difference to efficiency. But when I have used regular pedals recently my feet just appear to be sliding around all over the pedals. Something I was unaware of happening until I went clipless.

Specialized do vary. My tahoes are a 44 and sonomas are 43. Feet are wide so perhaps the former are a smidge narrower but they don't feel bigger!

I will keep that in mind for the future thanks vickster. I bought mine from a lbs as I was bothered about sizing online. I paid 20% extra for the privilege, but considering how long they last it is probably not a big deal. I have wide feet also but the BG shoes are really comfy a size up from normal, for me anyway.
