As you know, a part of the driving test is the observation where you watch a video from a drivers perspective and click at every hazard you have to be concentrating about.

I was wondering if there was one for cyclists. Like helmet cam or handlebar mounted one where you had to click on all the hazards you came across. I am going to try to make one out of my ride today and see how it turns out.

As someone who believes that cycling competence should be a part of everybody's driving test - but as compulsory cycle testing for drivers is never going to happen, videos to make sure drivers understand the hazards that cyclists face would both help them understand what to do when on 2 wheels and also help them understand better how cars can avoid being the hazard. Instructive also for Bikeability/proficiency courses.

So, without having thought it through fully, I think it could be an excellent idea you've got there. Very interested to hear other points of view on this.

I took my first driving test in NYC in 1992. In addition to the practical there was a compulsory 5 hour class on road safety which covered a bunch of stuff such as stopping distances, the affects of alcohol, etc. Half of us were new drivers and the rest were people in for 'driver ed' following driving offences. It had a profound affect on my driving.

We should definitely have something similar in the UK.

This is something I have thought about as well. I design online training and I have created one small piece of content in this area for a cycle training company. You can view it at http://www.cycletraining.co.uk/ (scroll to the bottom of the page). Apologies for the plug!

The same company I did this for also offer cycle training for lorry drivers and, occasionally, cabbies, by the way.
