Personally I don't trust a 'bike fit' done by a sales person. Once when looking at a Ridley cross the young lad measured me up and wheeled out my correct size and it fit quite well when I was in the saddle, however when I got off I couldn't reach the ground he was unaware of the difference in geometry between this and a road bike and the top tube almost ruined my married life.
Other factors beyond what should fit are flexibility, a pot belly, age and experience.

There are other hand positions as well, just to give your arms/wrists a change/rest. For example instead of holding the bar near the middle when on 'the tops', you can hold the corners where the bars turn forwards - this also gives you better steering as you have a slightly longer 'lever' between your hands and the centre of the bar.

Sheldon Brown calls that 'on the corners'. Of course - in reality there is an almost infinite number of hand positions possible. It's what works for you, in the end.
