Given that the OP was a well reasoned discussion offering an alternative to received wisdom with personal experiences and little, if anything, which was antagonistic, this late entry gets my vote as the most hypocritical post of the year.

The OP was not 'a well-reasoned discussion' it was seriously foolish advice. Anyone who follows it is at risk of serious injury.

As I cycle commuter of 2 decades I have always used my bike in winter weather but increasing your speed to counter ice is rank stupidity.

I'd also point out that Snorri lives in the far north of the UK and probably had trouble believing that any right-minded person could write such drivel.

OK Norm, perhaps I over egged it a bit with 7 X :troll: , but in the absence of a smilie signifying "Following the advice in the OP is likely to result in your hospitalisation", I felt it should sufficiently alert anyone new to winter cycling of the possibility the OP may be having a bit of a laugh.

When mountain-biking, there is an optimum speed for any particular terrain - if you ride too slowly across a loose rocks of a certain size, you are more likely to fall off. Not sure I would extrapolate this to ice/snow, though.
