WD40?

Nooooooooooo!

At least two bike shops I often visit say that WD40 is a no no. It's something to do with the chemicals that cause the chain to wear more quickly. They recommend GT85.

Many here wouldn't use use WD40 or GT85 (better) as a chain lube, but applied to a rag it's great for removing surface gunk from all over the bike and degreasing specific bits, like brake calipers and mech pivots
A thin film of GT85 or light oil on a rag over ally bits and frame is fine and offers good corrosion protection for winter bikes.
Regarding chains, there's a whole forum section's worth on that, personally I believe that proper lube and the Mickle method of cleaning (as per KMC's advice) the way to go. Other views are available!

A quick shower down in the bath will be fine!
Wipe the chain with wet-wipes or a rag with a drop (and only a drop) of WD40 or GT85 (which smells nicer) on the rag, don't spray it on the chain. Wipe the crud off the chain/sprockets, then lube, wait, wipe.
The only real problem time is when the gritters have been out as salt can quickly corrode, a bit of raiwater and road-grime won't kill it immediately!

why dont you spray directly to the chain?

is gt85 not better than wd40?
