Yes thats the cycle/horse path that runs alongside the expressway down to the swingbridge. A quick route but noisy and you tend to find a lot of horse poo and glass along it, but it's a quick alternative route through Runcorn ;)

Being in the centre of Liverpool, it's virtually impossible to avoid riding on main roads.

This is the route that I sometimes take towards Frodsham

http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=3241326

Notice it avoids most main roads but you still have to ride on at least one main road.

Going northwards you can go through Bootle, Litherland and Maghull, that avoids a lot of main roads but you still have to ride on some.

Get an Ornance Survey map and have a look for possible routes.

But you just have to bite the bullet and ride on the main roads.

Hi.... there's lots of routes. If you go to the www.letstravelwise.org/ and send them an email, asking for copies of the Liverpool, Sefton and Wirral maps, they'll send you them for free. They clearly show all the best routes for cyclists on decent quality maps.

Thanks for the tip Austin! I dropped them an e-mail right after I'd read your message, and the maps were on my doormat this morning ;)

Looking forward to taking the ferry across this weekend, and cycling along the Wirral coastline.
