Tried cleats once and hated them even though I went a bit faster. Like your description - it did feel as if my feet had been welded to the pedals.
I used to have the strap ones, but find that these toecap ones are ideal for me - I don't need a lot of power, I just like to be able to keep my foot in the optimum place, and to be able to pull the pedal up to a good pushing off point when I stop and start - but be utterly secure about getting my foot out in a hurry, and be able to wiggle it about a bit.
I do have SPDs - on my recumbent trike. Doesn't matter on that whether I get my foot off the pedal when I stop, and it stops the risk of a foot slipping off and being sucked under the trike at speed.
