Fair enough colin. So you are saying the tough rides work for you?
I don't do enough of them to control my weight that way and is much easier to do by eating less, but I have probably done about 50 rides of 100+ miles and I have always lost significant weight on them.

Actually, it amazes me that I do lose as much as I do, given how much I eat and drink on such rides. I can feel a difference round my waist after just 8-12 hours of hilly cycling.

I keep my weight under control by having one or two days of semi-fasting a week, and eat normally the rest of the time.

Maybe i will revisit tougher rides. I was just going off my memories of how i really used to pig myself on my return and since I in the new year started calorie counting of all things (myfitnesspal makes this pretty easy) I am now aware of what a mega amount of calories this must have been. But my semi scientific dieting has only been on the moderate/middling rsgime. Thanks for the reply, must try and meet up when i am up north.

Everyone is different. When I did my long ride (1200km) I found eating and drinking really hard. I was 5kg heavier at the end of the ride, but that was down to water retention. By the time that had dissipated after about 5 days of normal eating and no cycling, my weight was was within 400g of my starting weight.
