I don't know whether its right but I think I tend to call a LGV (ie a builder's, pick up truck etc) a truck and a HGV a lorry, the problem is all the ones that come in between
Some HGV drivers are dangerous, but only a handful - most give cyclists a wide berth (they do me, anyway). I have seen numerous cyclists in Portsmouth filtering up the inside of an HGV with millimetres to spare between the railings, themselves, and then the lorry. I always wince when I see that - the result of HGV vs. cyclist will always be 1-0 to the HGV ...
There are not huge numbers of collsions involving cyclists and LGVs (I recall a figure of around 2%) but the consequences of such collisions can often be severe, given the size/mass of the vehicle involved.
