Army of Shadows (1969)
Excellent film about French resistance fighters during Nazi occupation.

A Man Escaped by Robert Bresson is the story of a the capture and escape plan of a French Resistance fighter. It is usually found in the Top 10 movies of any serious film buff with good reason.

Another BW classic is Attack! By Robert Aldrich about dirty manouvaring by a cowardly officer to steal valour for his future political career.

The battle of algiers.
A truly great mature film which manages to tell it from both sides while hiding none of the brutality and slaughter committed by both.

Well, richard Todd has taken the lead but Clint Eastwood and Marlon Brando are right after him. Strangely, Richard Todd is also in 3rd place and chasing the pople who are chasing him.

Confused? Me too!

@Drago I've just thought of one that I can't believe you've left out - Patton.
One of my favourites, and of one of my military heroes - Patton was the one allied general that the nazzies truly feared and respected. But, after much thought I decided to exclude it due to it being more biographical, albeit a biopic about a bloke who was pretty good at war.
