. Also reading recently the Germans powered V2s from ethanol and it consumed the entire potato crop of several countries
I thought the war was over!
The above is highly unlikely and is not provable, so best not bring it up.

Would love to try an electric car for a while , had a hybrid civic as a company car when they first came out but couldn't see what all the fuss was about then .
Our car requirements are similar to @DCLane in budgets and needs

At 69 years old my licence is up for renewal later this year, with my Good Ladies mobility problems I'll have to renew my license and keep driving, if I was on my own I'd happily sell the car and go back to public transport and cycling, with the driving I'm doing I could swap to electric, it would do the job, but I couldn't afford to buy an electric car. As others have said already, we need a better transport system.

If your only doing a short commute an electric car makes sense, even with a bit of forethought it's possible to travel further afield, however where it falls apart is for anyone who works in a service environment and gets called out for jobs, an electric car/van is useless, plus load it up with tools & spares and the range gets worse, not good when someone is waiting for a repair that's brought production to a halt

I drive a hybrid and have had it for about three months.
The limited battery capacity is frustrating. When I bought the car, I thought when driving, I would mainly use the battery to supplement the petrol engine. In practice I prefer driving it on the battery. I find I also mentally plan journeys to switch between the units, so that if I am driving in residential areas or in a city centre, I try where possible to use the electric motor.

For some businesses, EVs would work perfectly, and with some thoughts regarding town/city centre deliveries working from local hubs for example, could make diesel/petrol emissions in those areas improve.
It’ll never happen this way though, so forget that idea! Much better to continue to have out of town retail parks which spread retail areas away from consumer and require people to drive to access them!
For myself, I could do all I require, including driving to Switzerland, France, Germany and Spain, using a longer range vehicle (Kia/Hyundai type with 280 mile range) and my required commute/shopping/family trips.
If I were retired, I would make an EV my first purchase (if I could afford one).
I would prefer to have an alternative though, hydrogen maybe, but I am of the opinion that we should all attempt to reduce our reliance on cars where possible, so public transport, safer cycling routes etc.
Having experienced Holland, Belgium and other places, including the southern part of the UK, it could make a great difference if these cycling projects continue to grow, and I accept that this wouldn’t help everybody.
So, to sum up, yes I would prefer not to have a car which used fossil fuels, and be in a position to travel where and when I chose without the assistance of anyone else.

I have usually replaced my car aprox every three years.Looked at buying a self charging hybrid Didn’t look far when I saw the price My Renault Captur has only done 37,000 miles in three years It will be even less annual mileage this year as currently I am doing as I’m told by our glorious leader.

Pretty sure the car will outlast me:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

I couldn't afford to change my car every three years, my Suzuki Swift is now coming up to 10 years old, I've had it for 4 years now, unless my numbers come up when its knackered thats likely to be it.
