You joke ! It was actually quicker for my mate to order parts direct from the UK when he was cycle touring in Malaysia (where Shimano manufacturing is) than buy locally.

That's clearly a worldwide phenomenon. I can get Smart car parts from China quicker than the UK or Germany. OK, they're pattern parts, but the quality of many is surprisingly decent, whereas stuff is perpetually on back order from Germany.
