There is no need to "solve" world hunger. The planet currently produces more than enough food to give every single occupant enough food to survive.
The issue is one of distribution/share. The people in the developed countries would need to simply redistrtibute some of their wealth. Uk/US etc standard of living decreases somewhat but everyone gets to eat.... Can't see that happening any time soon.

The amounts spent on science/space exploration are minuscule compared to military or even social/healthcare spending, saying we are "wasting" that money is short sighted stupidity.
