In real life the real hard men are usually the ones with mad eyes and absolutely no thought about taking a step backwards. It’s innate in some people.
I imagine Oliver Reid could be very scary, especially when he was a young man.

I call people handy if they’re good with their fists, to me hard men are the type who can endure…think SF types. McNab, Slattery(US type) et al Randolph Finnenes(so?)comes to mind also.

At the risk of being serious and perhaps raising the tone, this chap is a seriously tough man.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nirmal_Purja

He climbed all the 8000m peaks in a single season.
This is beyond all reason, and a feat of toughness, skill and luck. Along the way he did 3 8000m summits, Lhotse, Makalu and Everest in a single round over 48 hours, which, not surprisingly, has never been done before either, and he was also subsequently amongst the first to do K2 in wintee

Oh and on the other meaning of "hard man" he was a Gurkha soldier and in the SBS too

Got to be Roger Moore.

As Simon Templar, James Bond, and Lord Brett Sinclair, he could flatten any number of baddies with just a flick of the eyebrow, all whilst beating off the ladies with the proverbial sh!tty stick.

And once finished all he needed to do was give his tie knot a quick adjustment.

Roger more…….always an ambition of mine when I was in my 20s
