So, let's have some nominations for the CycleChat awards for 2012. Here are mine to start us off:

Best Rider: Marianne Vos - just dominated the women's racing; and Peter Sagan, for the combination of talent and entertainment.
Best Newcomer: Sergio Henao - he can climb, he can finish, and if he ever learns to TT he will be a seriously scary rider.
Best Team: I don't like them that much, but Sky - they are the reason Wiggins won so much, and that's why I gave them my nomination for this rather than Wiggins individually, much as I like him.
Best Stage Race: the Giro. Slightly more balanced this year but still with some head-shakingly hard mountain stages, and a great duel of different styles between Purito and Hesjedal.
Best Stage: Stage 17 of the Giro, with Purito taking it.
Best Day Race: Boonen at the Paris-Roubaix + the women's RR at the Olympics, with Vos holding off Lizzie Armistead at the end.
Best Sprint: Cav on Stage 18 of the Tour - an insane sprint, I still love the shake of the head from LL Sanchez as Cav goes past him at an unfeasible speed.
Best Climb: Dario Cataldo on Stage 16 of the Vuelta (the ludicrous Cuitu Negru)
Best Breakaway: Young Thibaut Pinot (Stage 8 of the Tour), with Marc Madiot going ape in the team car.
Delight of the Year: Well, either Pinot or that amazing win by Iljo Keisse on Stage 7 of the Tour of Turkey, not least for Carlton Kirby completely losing it in the commentary box...
Disgrace of the Year: Armstrong. Enough said. But Grabowski in the Tour of Turkey comes close in terms of things that actually happened in racing this year.

How about yours? Different nominations, more categories?

Best Rider: Judith Arndt - yes, Vos dominated women's cycling, but Arndt snuck in and took the TT worlds in her last season. women's cycling will be missing a true star now she's retired.
Best Newcomer: Laura Trott
Best Team: has to be Sky. my heart belongs to Euskaltel Euskadi though, but Sky really have delivered.
Best Stage Race: Giro - it's always bonkers and unpredictable
Best Stage: Stage 9 of le Tour... being in the car behind Rogers for the TT
Best Day Race: Women's Olympic RR. seeing the crowds on Putney bridge in lashing rain. Paris-Roubaix as always.
Best Sprint: "Cav on Stage 18 of the Tour - an insane sprint, I still love the shake of the head from LL Sanchez as Cav goes past him at an unfeasible speed." +1 also loved the quote from Roche when asked how he felt when he saw Cav go by - he said he didn't see him, he only realised when LLS stopped pedalling and he looked up and Cav was celebrating.
Delight of the Year: Laura Trott - i really hope she develops on the road as well.
Disgrace of the Year: Armstrong, for the umpteenth year running
Best Winning Celebration: anything involving Sagan.
Winning Loser of the Year: Fabian Cancellara for riding the Olympic TT knowing he hadn't a hope, simply because he was the reigning champ and wanted to 'defend' his title. great interview with him recently where he said winners have to know how to lose.
Memorable Moment: winning a trip to Le Tour and a ride in the team car. seeing Judith Arndt during the Olympic TT and finally getting a chance to cheer her on in person.

Some alternatives:

I think Philip Hindes has got to be up there for disgrace of the year, if I may skip past the obvious choice

I thought the Vuelta was the better stage race compared to the Giro, but that was because I wanted to see what Froome could do, so I followed it a bit more closely. But the stage finish in the snow up to the Stelvio with de Gendt out front was a beautiful scene.

Best sprint: Champs Elysee with Wiggo leading out?

Can't disagree with the other choices, all reasonable

Best Rider: It's got be Wiggo. The first ever rider to win Paris-Nice, Tour of Romandie, The Dauphine and the Tour in the same season. The first Brit to win the Tour and then he capped it off with Olympic gold.
Best Newcomer: Laura Trott
Best Team: Sky, it's boring but they delivered in spades
Best Stage Race: For me the Vuelta
Best Stage: Champs élysées. Because I was there to see a British yellow jersey lead out a British rainbow jersey
Best Day Race: Women's Olympic Road Race, a great pick me up after the men's
Best Sprint: Stage 18 of the Tour. For LLS's reaction!
Delight of the Year: Gilbert turning his season around to win the Worlds
Disgrace of the Year: There's only one answer here
Best Winning Celebration: Wiggo, Chatres (did I mention I was there?)
Winning Loser of the Year: Greipel. He won loads but he's always in Cav's shadow
Memorable Moment: My 2 year old son trying to say Vincenzo Nibali !!!

Wiggins as best rider after his stellar season.
Grabowski for twat of the year. Bleedin' idiot. Armstrong's disgrace won every year from the year 2000 for some of us, so I'm excluding him.
The Giro should be the best race for the parcours and the scenery but a little let down by the lack of quality riders this year who were frightened by its recent severity and proximity to the TdF. I'm hopeful of better this year if Wiggo and Nibali go head to head.
Kudos to Gilbert for overcoming the doubters.
Sky and OPQS were easily the best teams in different ways. Over dominance can be boring but I was just happy to suck it up to see Brad do great things.
Best winning speech of the year... Wiggo again.
