The long hot summer probably had more to do with it. Unbroken sunshine from May to September.
Roads not sticking to the tyres! Unlike 95.
 
It would be interesting to compare with other statistics

For instance in 1949 a car was an aspirational purchase and not common. All those people would have cycled, walked or used public transport

As the cost of motoring has dropped in real terms and become more accessible this may have had an effect

I was thinking about how in the mid/late 50's people would start to have more disposable income. They then have all the people coming from the old Empire, as part of the breaking up of the Empire and allowing people to emigrate to the UK as the country were all starting to run things themselves.
