Cycle Storage Rant

My three bikes (ancient roadie, bog-standard hybrid and newish MTB) live in my garage. Unfortunately, the garage is used as a junk store by Mr Hamster and the old wood, toolboxes, God knows what else, get piled up against my bikes despite my frequent pleas to keep them reasonably accessible.

Today- 5 minutes to extract the hybrid- Grrrrr! :cursing:

Worst of all, as they're always being knocked against each other, the pedals get stuck in the spokes, the paintwork gets chipped- in the case of the old steel roadie that means rust- and my pet hate, the Derailleurs get knocked and my gears don't work properly and need constant adjusting!

Does anyone else have this problem?

I have an apalling bike shed that doesn't shut properly and is full of horse rugs, will at some point build a better one - steel sheds are awful

I don't have a shed, just have to climb over the bikes in the hallway

How about getting some hooks and hanging the bikes up from them? It could help prevent the piles of stuff on top of the bikes.

No, I don't have that problem, but I am not sharing a home with Mr Hamster. Sometimes you just have to go the root of the problem, trade him in, it's ruthless I know, but you have to think of your bikes, you owe it to them.

I totally agree. People have divorced over less. Bung him on eBay.

I have a similar problem too, for example if I just want to get some lube off a shelf, I ended up getting showered in falling aerosols of GT85, WD40 and cans of polish, tubes of grease etc. Move a bike and all sorts of clutter comes falling down despite nothing resting on them, but that just about sums up the whole house, full of junk and clutter which I might need one day.

Mr Summerdays was away last week and as a result I've been able to stack the bikes to my satisfaction ... almost looked as if I could squeeze an extra bike in the shed... I suspect that it will return to normal this week. When I put away the bikes (well mine and the youngest child) on a daily basis ... I know exactly where the wheel goes and even where the pedals line up so that they stack together better. I assume it will be back to normal (bike shed more chaotic) next week now he is back.

Hanging is the answer.

Start with the bikes. You can special brackets from DIY sheds specially for bikes. When not in use they hinge back against the wall.

That should do the trick, if not you'll just have to try it on Mr Hamster.

I share a garage with family members and I'm all too familiar with that feeling of heart sinking and increasing blood pressure as I walk into the garage to find someone has decided that the lawn mower belongs on top of the bikes, or the track pump belongs up in the void in the roofspace, or someone has brought home half a bag of concrete mix that was left over after a job they were doing and were too slovenly to put it somewhere safe and has left it in the middle of the garage floor, in a big pool of grey dust, don't want that on my bike thanks...

Last weekend I got so fed up with the clutter in the bike store (aka the garage) that I emptied almost the entire thing, threw away a ton of crap, put in some storage units and had a general tidy up.

As a result, I can walk right into the garage without hindrance, get either Biancha or the motorbike out without a fight and just hop on and ride. Tis a good feeling when it's finished.

Just re-read your initial post and notice that you said you allow Mr Hamster to use the bike store. There's the problem and easily solveable too!!

I don't have this problem largely because Claire is too short to operate the up&over garage door comfortably so she avoids going in to the garage at all.

I find it helps a lot having a prop stand on each bike so they can be stood up on their own wherever there is some floor space.

What is this "floor space" that you refer to"
