Stupid question can anyone advise on some padded shorts that aren't skin tight?
I've been using muddyfox shorts but my errm backside is taking a proper pounding (from the saddle!) and that's the biggest thing stopping me from doing more milage so uncomfortable

Could you not wear baggies over padded lycra? That's what I started out doing.

First get the saddle right. Height, position fore-aft, and tilt (dead level ir slighlty nose down) . Perhaps different saddle even if what you've got is poor (or poor for you). As a rule padding or gel saddles are a "very bad thing" . Many of us here.favour Brooks saddles but don't suit everyone.

Then worry about shorts. I cycled in ordinary trousers for my first 25 years cycling - but now go for proper cycle shorts (or 3/4 length, usually bibs) as they are better, but by no means essential. I didn't get on with the baggy style - the lycra snug type do have a lot going for them once you forget the initial embarrasment - and they're common enough not to get a 2nd glance these days

Thanks for the replies ... I'd have no idea about the right saddle for me as I'm new (my friend said first purchase is new pedals so I don't have ones that wouldn't look out of place on my daughters bike lol)
Shorts are so expensive too! But if I was to wear Lycra I would have to hide them under some looser fitting shorts I get embarrassed taking my top off when I take the kids swimming!
The saddle I have is a standard specialized one that came with the bike

Go for the lycra shorts - honestly you'll not regret it after the first day.or two of feeling self-concious

If you're shy white is best avoided, as is walking into rough pub wearing em.

Muddy fox padding is pitiful! Look at the dhb range from wiggle. Wear Lycra shorts under some walking shorts or similar if you prefer? You shouldn't wear anything under padded shorts, no even undies and they should offer ample compression

That's the way but you'll soon ditch the other shorts ;) Get some that are light and perhaps with a little stretch

I own some Muddyfox shorts from SportsDirect that are loose but have a separate padded liner you can detach, they're actually not too bad either, the padding is just not as tight as it could be up front: could just be a sizing issue. This is the pair with padding that is shaped; they also sell pairs that have a very flat piece of yellow foam and they don't look too appealing but I have not tried them.

I did however start off wearing padded undershorts like in the above ebay link under trackies (in winter). They did me well through shorter rides, however, there is a little too much padding in the ones I have, and I think based on the pics they're the same, and that got a bit uncomfortable when starting to hit 30 miles.

I bought a pair of DHB aeron Lycra shorts to wear under the trackies, much more comfortable even though they're the lower end of the range. However, one day I just went for it, and went out in them alone and have not looked back. I am a very self conscious person, but to my knowledge, not one person has said anything or looked at me funny, and now all I think is so what if they do, I don't know them, and I'd rather be comfortable than care about their inability to not look at my shorts!
