our path is so narrow I normally end up left in the bushes being too polite to shove anyone else out of the way. They there was last week when I had to get off and walk round some guy who had his earphones in and couldn't hear my bell or me shouting excuse me

SIGNAL!

I think that the range of abilities, lack of any formal markings or instruction makes these paths fraught.

My method is to signal my intention. I try to keep left, and if there is someone who seems to want to go to my left, a definite signal tends to make them alter course.

ARRRGGHH! JESUS CHRIST!

Major fail. Just imagine the above in CAPS.

(previews)

Oh, the CAPS thing is in CAPS.

So I'll go back and alter that first line..

Ok. Just imagine the first line is the whole of the post.

Done.

I find that drivers who cycle keep to the left. Pedestrians and pedestrians who cycle keep to the right.

As a driver (without a car:cry:) I just grit my teeth and manoeuvre out of the way. The only exception to this is if the right hand side of the path has cyclist coming the other way. I tend to encourage those on the left to give way then.

...would you keep left?

Yes, but I am always ready for the unexpected;)

Pedestrians are advised to walk on the right on roads so they face the traffic. They are probably just following that advice.

Or they want to wind up cyclists!

Interesting.

Reason I ask is because I was cycling down a local cycle path yesterday keeping left, and met a guy on a MTB keeping right-ish. I moved over tight to the left to give him room, then he moved the same way! I moved back across to the middle to let him through (and avoid a head-on!), and got a 'Don't f***ing move over' from him as he went past.

I think he was just an idiot - he was hammering along on a crowded section making no allowance for peds, dogs etc; but it just set me thinking.

I've always tended to keep left; just wondered what others do. I think these paths are fraught, though, and you have to be (a) aware, (;) prepared to make allowances!

I'd agree 100%. He sounds like an idiot to me.

Me too. Sounds like it had nothing to do with which side you were on, per se, and all to do with the fact that he'd chosen a course, and didn't want to have to deviate from it. Tit.

I stay left, but expect everyone else to do random stuff, and act accordingly...

Actually, it's us who drive on the correct side, everyone else is wrong, and it's all Napolean's fault, I gather...

Oh, absolutely. I should have left the 'I think' out of 'I think he was just an idiot' above.

As I say, the OP really had nothing to do with what he did, it just set me thinking about the general view...
