Working at a busy Bristol hospital, often on night shift. I get quite anxious wondering if my bike is safe from theft. I wonder if you far more experienced cyclists know which locks are the best?

An Abus Granit X or a Kryptonite fahgettaboutit, plus a cable to secure saddle and front wheel. Or one of each of the beastie D locks

Unfortunately, no lock is theft proof if the thief wants your bike and has the tools and opportunity

What bike is it? If I were you, I'd get a really cheap beater bike and a serious lock if leaving overnight in a high risk area
If this isn't possible, make sure the bike is properly insured and you adhere to the policy terms

Get it marked by the police and make sure the serial number and details are registered

A friend of mine had their bike stolen fairly recently. They had a Kryptonite Fahgettaboutit fitted and used it against some railings. The thieves cut through the railings themselves, and were seen about half a mile down the road (near a police station) carrying the bike with padlock still attached. The police knew of them as they were regularly taken in for bike theft related incidents.

My advise is to buy a decent lock, make sure it is secured on something substantial. As @vickster has also suggested... a cheap beater bike for you commute may leave you feeling less worried about its disappearance. The trouble is that if somebody wants to steal it, they almost certainly will (or damage it beyond a reasonably usable condition if they cant).

Don't they have staff areas for locking up bikes - I thought most of the hospitals do? I'd use a D-lock and lock it up next to someone with a cable lock - theirs should go first unless your bike is very nice.
