Maybe a daft question?

How are cycling jerseys supposed to fit?
I bought one the other week online. Decided on a medium (I have a 40" chest) When the jersey came I tried it on and could hardly get the thing on. Obviously too small.
Sent it back and got a large. Tried that on when it arrived and found it quite close fitting around the chest, quite snug around the upper and forearms. Main problem was the midriff! It fitted like a compression top.
I know the midriff problem is due to my man baby which I aim to address when the better weather comes!

How are jerseys supposed to fit? Should they be quite snug to prevent flapping about? That's how I imagine they should fit. If so, I'll be ok with what I have. Or should I be going for XL? to allow for layering up underneath?

I have always gone for as big as possible size. I am larger than the average woman and find that I have to buy the mans sizes .

I have found Tenn outdoors cycle clothing to be generous in sizing and also cycle-clothing.co.uk. If that helps.

The Glue that binds us together.
I like them to be comfatable, not to loose though.

I know how you feel, when it comes to clothes I prefer a more snug fit...however with a shirt which is designed to be close/a wicking layer getting the correct size can be difficult (moobs ruin all of the fun).
If you prefer a baggier shirt due to body size, you could always get a cheap compression top from SD to act as a base layer, meaning best of both worlds and a better cycling jersey on top of this

I like the 'daddy baby' term.

They're usually fitted, so will be tight over the middle if it's a bit bigger than usual. However, keep the jersey and it's then an incentive to 'shrink' into.

I got a lovely Nalini one in Small, which wouldn't even go over my shoulders in April 2011. By the August I could just wear it and it now fits fine = no more 'daddy baby'.

My wife bought me a XS Bradley Wiggins Fred Perry cycling jersey last week. After a winter of hard training, I can get into it (though at 180cm it couldn't be any shorter). It's a very good motivator...!

If you ever find one that fits, please let me know. I may take a look at the brand and see if they have any women's versions - I can never get any that fit. Current one fits over the bust, but not a hope anywhere else, way too loose. even the arms & wrists are baggy on it...

I find with women's sizes that they are suited to in-proportioned ladies......I am not in-proportion. If I was to buy a top that fits my chest then it will be baggy everywhere else and if I was to buy one to fit around my middle then there is no hope of getting my chest into it.
I prefer a slightly looser top so I buy men's mediums

my current one fits over the chest, but I could easily put 2 arms into one of the sleeves and have room to spare they are that big... I do have very narrow wrists & ankles though. still looking for something even vaguely close to the concept of 'fitting'. Not sure mens will help me here there because the womens that fit me over the chest are loose around the waist/hips/arms and any mens versions would only have eve more material in the arms...

I do have the problem of long sleeves. I just roll them back once or twice......but as I said I do prefer slightly loose to tight-fitting

In my experience, men's cycle clothing tends to be sized on the small side, even allowing for the fact that it's supposed to be 'fitted'. I'm about a 37" chest, 30" waist and I have to buy Medium shirts and shorts. Whereas with football or golf shirts a Small will normally still be a fairly loose fit.

I've found with most sports wear ruddy sizing is all over the place and what might be 'medium' in normal clothing is 'Oh-God-It's-Moving-Towards-Us' in cycling wear. Being a fat git I favour MTB-ish jerseys, which the arbiters of taste and decorum allow because I've got a cyclocross bike.
