.....which I am willing to pay if needs to be I'd be daft not to thoroughly look around.

That included coverage for competition which they also called mass participation events eg sportives I guess.

I am looking at possibly adding a £2300 trek to my collection (a £700 alu road bike and a £1000 mtb) and being carbon and of that value want to make sure I have proper insurance for them. Any companies you can suggest / recommend?

What cover do you get for the £355 and was that just for the two bikes you've got?

Hi Dave - I didn't make full note of the ins and outs but am looking for theft, accidental and competitive (if they have a box to tick for sportives) and perhaps public liability at least. It was for all 3 bikes as I will be buying a new one and the £2300 is top of the list at the moment.

The new one made up over 50% of the policy when I removed it to see. Eg another company's monthly premium was around £4 for £700 bike, £6 for the £1000 mtb and about £25 for the new £2300 bike to be.

E and L insurance - eandl.co.uk The E stands for equestrian as they started life doing horse related insurance and are still relatively specialised.

It does? ...it looks it compared to what I've found out so far. I was / am prepared to take out what is necessary for the new bike but imagined £200 - £250 at the most. Though insurance has gone up all round this year so maybe I wasnt so far out. Also remembered the £700 bike is on the house insurance so depending on what quote they come back with I will be able to reduce E and L quote by one bike.

Just be careful with E&L. Their premiums work on lunar cyles/months not calendar months, so thats 13 per year not 12, and there are some pretty awful experiences of people trying to make a claim. Do some googling first if I was you and make sure you really check t&c's. We were going to insure our caravan with them, but decided against it due to other peoples experiences. I've reluctantly come to the decision that cheap insurance is no good if it doesn't pay up.

Thanks Chris. Unfortunately they are around £80 cheaper than the others but would be a nightmare if didn't pay when required. I will rethink.

I'm with E&L seem ok but I've only a sub £750 daily on the policy I'd suggest ringing them and asking them a few probing questions see what they come back with

Might be worthwhile having a word with M&S about their Home Insurance. I have my buildings and contents insurance with them which includes loss or damage to items worth up to £4000 when they are temporarily away from home anywhere in the world. My annual premium is only £253.74 and there is no excess. I specifically asked if bikes were covered and they confirmed this. They also confirmed in writing that there was no special security requirements for locking bikes and that "any form of security for these will suffice". So no need to fork out for (or carry!) gold, silver or bronze locks. I've had a look in their Policy Booklet and there is nothing listed under exclusions for competitions, but it might be advisable to ring them on 08001214071 to ask about this.

Look into moving household contents policy.

I'm with CIS and they cover bikes upto £1k in value new for old. If you've got ones worth more, then you take out a 'named item' policy - I have a £1.3k fixed and a £4k road bike for about £100 per annum addition.

Question - if it's only cover for sportives, which are NON COMPETITIVE (i.e. it's not racing, despite what some people like to think) then why cover for competition?
