I had two of the Lucas Cyclometers linked to by compo, one 26" version on the bike I had age 11, and a 27" version later. kept it on the bike except when it was stripped down for time trials. They worked well.

Now have a wired VDO device on each of my bikes. Mainly used for mileage recording, but having a speedometer is quite useful/ interesting.

I can't say needing batteries is a real problem. I change them at new year when the year changes to an odd number (i.e. every 2 years), along with a number of clocks and remote controls.

Bought them for £10 each after VDO changed the model in 2009 and still have the extra one as a spare. The previous one was a Cateye wired one, and the sensor on that failed after 4 years when spares were no longer available for it. Compare with the Cyclometer - that lasted 7 years - 85,000 miles - until it was stolen with the bike.
