I used to take a paper map with me but the problem I found was that even if I got lost I wouldn't bother stopping to take it out and I'd just keep going even if it meant getting a bit more lost

Thanks guys, I have no real need of a high end model with full mapping at the moment so something like the edge 200 / rider 20 would be fine for me I guess.... Just want accurate tracking etc, I've managed this long with my trusty cat eye strada!

Me thinks a scan on eBay maybe in order

Quite possibly. I've had a Garmin Edge 705 and 800, and am currently annoyed with Garmin for the bugs in the 800, which they refuse to fix. Instead, they're forcing people to buy the 810 instead (which no doubt has its own bugs). Their marketing will ensure people keep buying their units, but they're starting to resemble Apple in their attitude to their existing customers. I'm considering getting a Bryton GPS, if only to see if the competition is any good, i.e. I'm prepared to take the risk that they're no good, because I'm getting fed up with Garmin.

Between me and my wife we have both - hers is a Garmin 800 and mine a Bryton Rider 50. The Bryton does everything it needs to, but has some flaws, like a small, low res screen and sometimes significant delays responding to commands. Have no issues with its tracking ability and the data produced and I can say that the software has improved a lot since I started using Bryton, so they seem to be on the ball as far as development goes. I have to say that the Garmin is a better unit, and we have not had any issues with it, but it was more expensive, even second hand.

I use a Mio Cyclo505 and a Satmap Active 12. For mapping nothing beats the Satmap and it can now be used with a HRM and cadence sensor if you want to.

Garmin 200 is great for basic needs. doesn't support Ant+ so you can't add external monitors for heart rate or a speed sensor for turbo use..... but I've got one one and it does everything I need.

Halfords occasionally do a 3 for 2 on cycling gear and include the Garmin so sometimes people put group buys together on here when that offers on....

currently got an edge 510 which i've been very happy with but I now need mapping so I want an 810 but might have to go for an 800 as funds are tight.
Looked at the bryton series (was put off by the software and I like garmin connect) and I tried an etrex 30 (wasn't quite 'bike' enough for me).
You can use the breadcrumb trial if its anything like the 500, served me well.
The thing I found about the fit files (500 experience) is they didn't convert to well to TCX alot of problems with peaks and troughs in the elevation data, but then I do a lot of geek wise most dont think about.
My 500 was stolen by a family member, I had to get a Rider 20 to tide me over till I can afford something a little bit more upmarket, the only two draw backs to its recording is no auto pause (that I have found) and it only records every 3's, not major problems but it does effect things like avg sp on strava, i did have have a rider 35 once and i was impressed it was more acurate than the garmin, but had one draw back on it breadcrumb trial, in that one ride I did I rode a leg to a loop and having finish the loop, and doing the same leg home, it was trying to tell me to start again, this never happened with the 500. I am looking at getting maybe a 705 or a Rider 50, if I can hold out long enough I will get the rider 60 as I can get one for about £230 and from what I understand it will compete with the 810. However response from Bryton is a little poor I dont know about Garmin never had to contact them.
When I had the Rider 35 their site was a little clunky (still is a little) however the fact you can now download from the unit to your computer is a big plus, as you can down load brytons file bdx, a TCX, GPX or PWX (training peaks I think), the tcx file can then be uploaded to any site.

Two differences between them, the 200 does basic breadcrumb trials, the rider 20 doesn't but it does support Ant+ so will record H.R. and Sp/Cad if you wish, see my above note about 3's recordings. The rider 20 can be had for about £50 if you look around, they have the 21 but not sure of the differences.

Garmin or Bryton? ..... or Other.

Just curious, who uses what and why?

Etrex 20, bought for walking when I realised the phone would be worse than useless. OK, so I like gadgets.

Now I've read all the posts I see it was an old thread.
