One more daft question, I presume the wired computers can be removed from the bike to prevent theft?

Indeed, you leave the holder on the bike, the computer can be removed.

Pretty well all cycle computers have a quick release system that lets you take the computer off the bike.

When I first got my computer I thought a backlight would be important but in practive I NEVER use it. In town it's easy enough to see the screen by streetlight if need be and if it's dark enough that I can't see it then I'm generally more concerned about riding into potholes that I can't see.

Wireless computers look cooler and cost more but to be honest I don't think wired looks bad at all and they are more reliable and cheaper.

The Sigma BC906 is a good value and nice looking computer. You can get it for around £12-14 if you shop around.

Point taken HJ, buy cheap now, regret later, and I have heard of VDO before! Do you have a recommendation of which model VDO 'cos there's a head-spin inducing range to choose from ;).
I'm thinking the A8 would suit as it does what I want and isn't wireless (I'm not scared of cables  ).

Aye, the A8 is a good choice if you are after that something that strait forward, reliable and if you only have one bike. If you are wanting to be able to switch between two bikes (or if you plan get a second bike in the future) then I would suggest the X1...
