Hey guys, its Kovu asking for your help yet again

Parents have given me some money for finishing my GCSEs and though I decided not to blow it all, and in fact will put the majority of it in the bank, I want to buy myself a cycle computer now I have actually got more serious about this cycling stuff.

So what do you guys suggest? I want something that’s going to tell me speed, average speed, max speed, distance, possible cadence, I’m not sure. Its only for one bike as well. I would prefer wireless, or is there no real benefit? Also are heart rate monitors a good and useful tool or not?

Any help is grateful

Sigma BC906 is what i've got. Doesnt tell cadence, not bothered with that, just go with what feels right.
Its got distance, time, average speed, max speed, clock, odometre, total time.
I have two of them, one for the fixed, one for the Giant, not had any problems with them, easy-ish to fit. Waterproof aswell, i've been out in some heavy rain, they've fell off when the bike has fell over and they are still working.

Both look good products them.

roadiewill: have got a cateye light (not that this has much to do with this topic) and its held up very well, are the computers of the same standard then.

I do find my heart rate monitor useful - interesting to see how hard you are working, and useful if you're interested in training.

I have one of these:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/VDO-HC-12-6-Bike-Computer/dp/B000NM1R2A

It's not wireless (which can sometimes get interference from mobile phones, other computers etc), but has lasted 6 years, only got through 2 batteries and has withstood being dropped, bashed and generally abused. Even if you don't want a heart rate monitor there are loads of other VDO computers.

It's outlived two of Chuffy's cateye computers...which are good, but seem slightly less chunky.

 Thanks guys ... i've been to the LBS who said the cateye is a good product to buy, so at the moment i am leaning towards that brand.

But I am still torn between the Sigma as well, a friend had one and though she broke it (shes terrible!), she did say it was a very good product.

I got a Cateye for my birthday on Monday! I've just got one question though, if I could hijack the thread...

It has an odometer, but it also seems to have another function (distance 2) which seems to measure total distance. What is the difference?!

checkout the Blackburn Dephi 4

handles cadence (that's wired) but what it does that the others don't is show you cadence at the same time as speed and one other stat that you chose

the cateyes don't to my knowledge

You can reset the odometer to allow you to measure a trip, but retain your total cycling distance (well since you last changed the battery).

I'm guessing that either:
Thats the distance for the ride(maybe not)
Its the distance for when you put it on a second bike, so you can get another mount and put it on another bike and have the distance for that one aswell.
maybe not though, take it for a ride and see what goes on it.

The Odometer is a total record and is not easily resettable, whereas trip distance is a record of individual trips and can be easily reset. With my Cateye (a micro wireless) this can be set for two individual trips which run con currently, distance 1 or distance 2. The advantage of this as far as I can see, is you could reset distance 1 for each leg of a trip but have distance 2 recording values for the whole trip.

ooo ok, now I just have to work out how to reset one of the distances without resetting the whole computer (except odometer of course). Thanks guys.
