Big enough that I could see the inner tube through it if I went looking!

I had a very small cut, less than 5mm, and this gradually chaffed the tube to puncture! If the cut is on the inside of the casing the tyre will need scrapping unless you fit a 'boot' or piece inside to prevent the tube from expanding into the cut.

as brommyboy above says, even a very small lump inside the tyre can cause punctures - weekly, for several months. Guess how I know this

this would be enough to ruin your day on a downhill. its not really worth face planting for 20 quid.

Tyre boots will just get you home.

Only a stupid person would fit one, inflate the tyre to full pressure (120psi) then go round a downhill blind bend at 35mph+ Guess how I know this.
I ran a (Gatorskin) tyre with a doubled-up toothpaste tube boot for months, at around 100psi. Every time I saw the little blue glinty bit I thought to myself "I should probably change that," and then by the time I got home I had forgotten about it.
