I think the market is sticky with many sellers being unwilling to drop to a price where buyers will hand over cash. I base this on the number of bikes on Gumtree locally that have been there for months.

I remind myself the value of any object in the market is what someone will pay.

out of interest i was having a look on fleabay and just saw a 15 year old (?) boardman team carbon listed for only £50 less than the original purchase price .It does look mint but not £950 mint .

There are a few shockers. I've seen a few Boardman FS Pro's - the silver and green 2015 model, that I have, going for £800 plus. I paid £1,000 new for mine (with a scratch).

A few vintage frames going for good money still (well not selling). Someone has a Herety frame up on ebay for £350. It's a damn sight 'rougher' than mine, but it's not sold in months.

Just need someone to put up a Colnago C60 or V1-r in a 48s and I'll be all over it. There is a mint V1-r on ebay but it's a 45, but the big downside is it's missing the proprietary T45 BB insert that allows you to fit any pressfit bb (it's supposed to save the frame from any damage and is replaceable, BUT you just can't get them, sold out at the official importers. Only choice is 'copy' inserts from China, or a couple of options for a full BB that screws in the T45 threads, the main being Ceramic Speed, that's almost half the price of the frame on offer. I suspect, the missing insert is the reason it's not selling.

Popped in to see my favourite LBS yesterday who usually has a range on bikes in their small shop. It's gone and no sign of having moved elsewhere. Young guy so not retirement. Need to find another now.

This is why I support my local as much as I can. The day they wrap up leaving only Halfords in the Town will be a black one…..

I still struggle to find good quality road and mountain bikes at a sensible secondhand price. Admittedly I'm talking about decent quality rather than 'about town' bikes, so different markets.

I would never buy a bike at less than a 25% discount to the cheapest I could find it new, even in mint condition. When you factor in the risk/ hassle/comeback it doesn't stack up. Generally I find seller prices unrealistic on this basis. Often you can buy new/better/cheaper on sale, even now the German big retailers (like Bike 24) aren't shipping to the UK. The bike industry still seems to have post-Covid indigestion on stock, so lots of discounts on bikes (and kit).

If you don't want disk brakes, there are loads of high end road bikes going for not much - had 3 offers via ebay this weekend, just by 'browsing' bikes - £1k for a top end Wilier/Colnago with Dura Ace or Record...

A good barometer is sold items on fleabay.

A quick squiz suggest actual prices bikes are selling for are all over the place.
The thing that puts me off the cheap rim braked road bikes is not the lack of disc brakes, but the lack of clearance for wider tyres.

And gravel bike prices seem somewhat higher, although there's a cheap (and obviously well used) Topstone on FaceAche near me that seems to have been listed for ages.
