Hi,

I currently have a 10 speed Deore setup running an 11 speed chain.

I'm after a larger chainring (from 36t to 42t) and stumbled across this -

CUES FC-U4000 chainset; for 9/10/11-speed; 170 mm; 42T

I know about the (lack of) Cues and Deore compatibility, but as I'm running an 11 speed chain, do you think I could use the FC-U40000 (without replacing any of the other drivetrain components).

Note - It would fit the bike size wise and I'm going to check the existing chainline.

Thanks

The first question is why you're not just replacing the chainring on your existing crankset with a 42t item..?

The second point with reference to the crankset you're looking at is that you do know it's square-taper fitment; while presumably the Deore crankset is hollowtech (the two being incompatable and requiring different BBs)..?

Also the U400000000000 has a riveted-on chainring, essentially making the whole thing disposible once its worn out, which doesn't seem very clever.

As to actual compatability, I think you probably could get away with what you suggest - have a look at Path Less Pedeled on youtube as mixing and matching CUES and other stuff has been covered to some depth in some of Russ' vids.

Thanks for replying.

The bike is a Kona Dew Plus - specs here . Its got rd-m5120, cs-m4100 and sl-m4100.....though the cranks are Samox, and the current 36t chainring is welded onto the cranks. I should have noted that in the first place.

The bike has a Shimano square taper 68mm bottom bracket hence I was looking at the option of using the FC-U4000.

Noted that it has the welded chainring. It's a good point what with me having to replace the current cranks....because the chainring is welded.

I just checked and see the FC-U6000 chainring isn't welded, but its not square taper. I had considered changing the bb to hollowtech2 but as I've no issues with the existing bb I thought sod it I'll leave it as is for now, but maybe that option is back on the table.

I'll have a look at Path Less Pedeled - thanks.

No worries and thanks for the extra info - that makes a lot more sense!

I'll keep an eye out for square-taper / bolt-on chainsets; my knowledge of Shimano's stuff sub-hollowtech is even more murky, but I suspect they'll offer something suitable. Perhaps in the Alevio range or one of their non-series offerings.

Alternatively the hollowtech setup's not bad, but probably of questionable tangible real-world value over ST to many, and there's no point "upgrading" if you can wring some more life out of what you have

EDIT: After a quick poke of ebay it seems like exactly what you're after is elusive - with anything ST with detachable rings being 2x or 3x.. so you might be better off just biting the bullet and replacing the BB too. FWIW I picked up a BB-MT801 (IIRC) which is their middle-of-the-road MTB offering for less than £20 a while ago; so it should break the bank if you can bide your time and shop around.

Really appreciate the replies thanks.

I'm torn. Part of me wants to try the FC-U4000...just because I'm interested to see how it runs!

I'll have a think over the weekend.

No worries!

Personally I'd avoid anything as obviously disposible as that crankset, but I appreciate that the options are somewhat limited. Might be worth looking at third party cranksets?

EDIT: As I see has already been suggested by @All uphill!
