Andrew Gilligan has got his name on the front page of CTC's weekly e-mail newsletter.

Opening up that old debate about the value of cycle helmets

Bugger all else to do, eh Andrew ?

Quote - "I cycle daily and never use one;" - Watch out for those railings Andrew,

I've not seen it but i can guess its full of opinionated do-gooders attempting to limit my freedom of choice still further.
I'm getting sick of being told at every turn what I can and can't do and having my civil liberties eroded by some jobsworth who think pavements should have balustrades and I need a corgi registered installer to change my tap washers

people expressing an opinion surely, no-ones making you do anything

plenty on here say helemts and hi viz cause accidents and make head injury more likely rather than less

The CTC boards are seem to be full of people who see themselves as drivers first and cyclists second. Loads of helmet wearing, not riding 2 abreast, must wear hi viz etc

Nowt wrong with having opinions, just makes the CTC seem a little irrelevant to me at times.

just seems every day I'm having my freedom to choose taken away from me and I'm being forced to comply with some health & safety legislation or other that makes work and leisure less straightforward or pleasureable .

Seem to spend half my time at work doing stupid risk assessments on the danger of using a pair of steps to do a loft survey

My view is once the government do something practical to slow traffic down and make drivers more aware and culpable for pedestrians and cyclist's safety then I'll support helmets.
Until then I feel the government are avoiding tackling the difficult and expensive root of the problem (vehicle drivers) and instead targeting the victims of careless and dangerous driving.

Wearing a helmet it not going to effect the number of RTA's one jot

Hmm! I don't see many CTC Forum posters (who may or may not be CTC members - it's an open forum) who would fit that description (other than the occasional 'wind-up merchant/troll).

You may consider the CTC to be a little less irrelevant if you have a quick browse here

Where the heck have you been? Welcome back.

Been a bit 'poorly' and unable to cycle (or walk) much for some time . I've been 'lurking' a bit here (and there ), but not feeling too 'chirpy' in general so I've been sort of hibernating - as far as fora are concerned. Thanks for the 'Wecome back' though snorri .

+1

It's a forum I visit frequently for good advice. ..and without the CTC's legal assistance recently my action against a careless car-user would have been exceedingly difficult.

Peanut is a well-known CTC-basher. Why I can't imagine as he has consistently failed to offer any rational explanation. IMO he has to be a troll.

err, what exactly is this based on?

the majority of people on the CTC forum don't seem to drive much, some don't even have cars

helmets, as on any cycle forum, is a divisive topic that's generally avoided as it leads to 90 page long threads

and as for two abreast, the majority on this recent thread were in favour

Funny, I always get the opposite impression and find myself in disagreement with what I see as reactionary, out-of-date views - by some of the more senior CTC members - on cycling safety in the modern world.

The days of plus-fours, pipe smoking and light music accompaniment to cycling are long gone (I admit to a certain amount of facetiousness here). However, there's still a great amount of enjoyment to be had if we wisely take into account our contemporary environment.

So I have reservations about the relevance of the CTC at times (speaking as a member) for different reasons.

d*mn what I am going to do with the ukulele then?

To bring it into the 21st century, perhaps it would lend itself to shredding and widdly-widdly licks as espoused by some of our guitar-playing members.

+1 for that, we cycle in one of if not the most anti-cycling country's in europe.

Why not Peanut, just for a giggle, exercise your right-to-choose.
Ride to work on the RIGHT hand side of the road.
