Steel or Aluminium, both will outlast you with the merest hint of TLC.
Cromoly is fine, it's durable and comfortable to ride and if you're not racing the extra weights neither here nor there.

If your ideal bike is a steel Galaxy, Ed, look for a second-hand one. I've got one that I bought in 1988. Nearly all the parts have worn out and been replaced (only the brake arms remain) including the paint - but the frame's done many thousands of miles and keeps going.

It's not for sale, I'm afraid. But plenty of others are. And Dawes (AFAIK) always used good quality Reynolds steels on them - until they switched to alloy.

what does AFAIK mean?
the cheapest one with reynolds steel that isn't even a reynolds cromly is the galaxy classic with straight reynolds 631 but costing £1,300

Reynolds 631 is a higher spec than standard cro-moly. I seem to recall that 4130 cro-moly is about equivalent to Reynolds 503. 525 is the next spec up and so on.

As Far As I Know.

Aye, £1300... that's why I'm suggesting a second-hand one. This one? This one?

Both could use a little updating, but your budget might stand that.
they look like i would end up giving them new wheels probably and several parts of the drive train need replacing
also i want the new, modern frame
If he's got anything left once he's built the recumbent trike that is . I think young Ed is our very own Walter Mitty.
i might be Walter Mitty but i am also jobless  meaning very low income to fund all the bikes i want need! got one or 2 business plans though so we shall see  really the galaxy will come before the trike probably because ultimatly i want it for lejog and back in 18 months time!
Cheers Ed

Wasn't Cromoloy an early Russian innovator in bicycle design? As I recall it was him that came up with the idea of putting the tube valve on the inside of the wheel. Sadly, his small cycling business was dismissed as bourgeois after the Revolution and his premises became General Purpose Factory Unit 227 making marmalade pot lids.

Aren't you still at school, so not exactly unemployed

Could get a paper round, not sure what else 15 year olds are allowed to do these days...apart from play X Box and occasionally study?
