Genesis don't make a bike less than 52cm. The smallest Evans had was a 54, pretty much nobody has a 52 as the new one is due (even though the 2011 bike is the same as the 2010). The cross bar on the 54 was way to high for me to have my feet on the floor without the bike trying to cut me in half. Most sites say for my height and leg measurement I should be on a 50cm frame. My current bike is even smaller.

I quite like the idea of the hub gear on the On One. This bike will mainly be used for commuting all year around, the odd ride out into the country side (think sustrans routes and canal paths) and a tour next year. I've not ridden a hub geared bike before except for my fiances pink dahon d3 with flower decals on it.

Before you splash the cash, are you aware there's an 11 speed Alfine hub just making it's way onto the market?   Better in several ways, not just the extra gears.

That's not to say that there's anything wrong with the 8 speed (I have one and like it) but knowing the options never did any harm, except to the wallet

I saw that a while back but it's twice as expensive. I haven't seen any drop bar shifters for the 11 speed yet although hopefully Shimano soon come out with some. They haven't made any for the Alfine 8, you have to use 3rd party shifters. As someone who works in IT there's always the tendency to wait for the first version to get some real world testing.

Oooh like the colour. Some black vinyl, pair of scissors, a swap to orange/black tyres and it becomes a bike in the colours of a certain Championship football club

Barnet?

Alfine 8 is rated for off-road use. It will eat up towpaths nicely. Alfine 11 is indeed pricey but would love to get hold of one and take it out for a spin. The 8 is greased, the 11 oiled, so can imagine the 11 is more effcient.
