Gah! Java updates demand more from me than my employer!

Read an article from pc pitstop today advising everyone to remove java completely as it's old software and not required now html5 is here.
Can't link the article sorry from my mobile, but anyone could google it i guess.

I removed Java altogether late last year - I don't get them little Google doodles any more but that's about the only difference I have noticed TBH.

I also removed Java altogether last year with no real loss. Not worth the risk of keeping it on your computer.

I just got update 13 today. It looks like they are finding new holes as quickly as they patch old ones!

I hadn't realised how out of fashion Java in browsers had become. It sounds like getting rid of it might well be the answer. I'll try running my browsers with it disabled for a while and see if I experience any problems.

Stupid article IMHO.. Many non web applications are dependent upon Java.
OpenOffice demands Java for specific functionality.
Adobe create suite requires Java for specific functionality.
Major E-Learning platforms such as Blackboard Learning System requires the user to have Java Installed.
If you run a Virtual Private Network the industry standard Cisco Any Connect VPN client requires Java to be installed.
We are far away from being Java free Imho.

Ah - I do use Open Office from time to time.

What's the verdict on disabling it in web browsers then?

Does open office get updated from the Web though Colin? I don't use it so i don't know. Just if it did, would that leave a security gap if office updates and talks to java?
Probably talking rubbish cos as i just said i don't really know or use it.
