Indeed there is an element of how many can you get before you get to the pink ball under lights.
Providing they don't lose to many wickets early, England batting at their first innings rate could well have a lead of 350-400 by tea tmr and then potentially have the whole (30 over) evening session to do some damage to the NZ top order, rather than just the half session (18 overs) they had in the 1st innings. England would then hope to get NZ 5 or 6 down and its game over.
