Hi All,

Just wanted to ask a quick question before buying a new seat for my bike.

Its been making a creeking noise recently, ive tightened up the bold as much as i can and also taken the whole seat off and clean it but when sitting down cycling its still making a creeking noise when going over bumbs or even uneven roads.

Does this sound like the actual seat has gone?

It could be that your seat post needs greasing slightly. Sometimes they creak as the two surfaces move against each other with the motion of the bike. A bit of grease will also help to avoid seat stem jamming which can be an absolute b*****d.

As @Cyclopathic says the seat post may benefit from a wipe of grease, but while you are at it the actual seat fittings could well benefit from a bit of grease as well.

Although I wouldn't wish it on some one I am pleased that there seem to be many people out there who I can share this pain with. It seems that if you mess about with bikes for long enough then you come across this at some point. Perhaps there should be a support group for victims.

I had an on-off creak for ages on a seat post, and could never identify where it came from though suspected the top end near the seat. But a new bolt at the top, where it clamps onto the saddle bars, seems to have fixed it - so far....
