Svendo,

Are there any reputable 18650 chargers? I really want the battery life that these cells will afford (at least three times what 3xAAAs can deliver), but have also seen some pretty nasty screen shots of what happens when they fail.

This ebay seller has a good reputation for such things, looking at his blog he does test things fairly thoroughly before selling them.
I've just ordered one of these and these.

G Benn could you let us know the battery life before a recharge, I think I'll get one of these, should be ok for unlit country roads.......
So far (I've only used it twice) I've been on two and a half hour rides and used it for about an hour and a half each time ,first time on a full charge second time i just put it on charge for twenty mins. sorry i can't give you a definitive answer yet,but like ck says prob 2 to 2.5 on full beam more on low!

Pete is this the sort of thing you would use on a fnrttc
Monster bright lights are a bit of a pain on FNRttC.
First couple I went on, a Hope Vision 1 was quite enough. Only ever turned it to max (supposedly 240 lumens) when I was on my own for a few minutes. I've since used a dynamo light which gives similar levels of brightness but over a wider field.
Wouldn't dream of taking a "1000 lumen" light on a FNRttC....way too much.

Arrgghghghghgh!

Two near right hooks on way home, one very close means I'm on Ebay looking for a replacement for the DX non-turned up one.

I've spotted this one, seems the same and ok at £26 (inc P+P) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290626506966#ht_9119wt_1037

It seems the same as the one above, just a bit cheaper and no compass, rear light or adaptor (I have one anyway). Anyone see anything wrong with it?

Looks the same but for a tenner extra you'll prob get it 20 or more days earlier if you need it right now! I've been waiting for a set of oakly jawbone s for about 3 weeks so far from China !!

I have one of the q5 torches like this, which I chose for the illuminated disk for side visibility. First change was a bit of tape to mask the disk from above, which works fine. I found the battery life not quite enough, but like the light so got a extension to allow me to use 18650 batteries (lots of sellers and chargers on ebay, 7dayshop etc.). It is brighter due to the higher voltage and should last more than twice as long (not used it enough to drain first battery yet).

so being really stupid, u buy the extension and 18650 battery and that replaces the 3 aaa batteries? is it that simple?

Yep, it's that simple. 18650 battery is about the same diameter as the 3aaa holder, the extension has the exact diameter to hold it without rattling. You need a suitable charger too.

Aldi were selling a similar torch a while back.
5W Cree, 3 AAA, zoomable, high, low and SOS flash.
It's really devastatingly bright.
I may have to get some 18650s though. No end of places do a 9 LED torch that'd take them. I have a few from Poundland that make quite good lights if you can bodge up a bracket.

Whilst those 9 LED torches are great for being seen, they are utterly useless to see by on unlit roads. They are not focused at all. The zoomable ones you mentioned, and the ones with only 1 cree LED and a proper reflector, are far better for the same price.

They're OK for commuting, and usable for CTC rides.
And only a pound too!
Yeah, they're really quite bright, so good for commuting on lit roads - However in my experience they don't light up the road much, if at all. For a cost effective front light, I like these. Extremely bright, a nice focus for unlit roads, and cheap! I believe they can take the battery upgrade too.
