A torque wrench is just like u spanner/ ratchet which lets you know when ur exerting a certain force on it , usually by a clicking noise
Eg set it to ten nm or lb/f and itl let u know when you tighten it to that , really handy tool and essential for a lota jobs

I had this problem on my 1997 Ridgeback hybrid - particularly noticable when pulling on the bars/bar ends for climbing. I too was worried that something was about to break.

A Dr Bike took a look at it, opened the clamp around the bar, wiped it and put a small amount of grease on the bar/clamp interface and it's been silent ever since.

So I'd try this first.

I'd be interested in how you get on.

Evening: back with update on the creaks!
Happy to report that the creaking has stopped. I feel I should be paying somebody for the good advice ^_^
I have greased the handlebar screws, the stem, also tighten a bit the nut that holds stem and allows to raise handlebars. It turned out this was a bit loose.
Ride to and from work were creak free all the way.
I had a look in my collection of tools, some of them inherited from my late partner: a torque wrench is amongst them. Haven't got a scooby how to use it, but I will learn, same way I learned to change a tap on a sink, a tyre on a bike
Thanks again all for your help
