Hollowtech I cranks - The drive side came off no probs.

Took out the thing with a 10mm allen. Screwed the crank remover tool in. Then put the other part of the tool in and bingo.

HOWEVER - The non-drive side doesn't appear to be pushing against anything to push the crank off. After trying god knows how many times and even trying to bodge it FAILURE.

I have also managed to knacker the threads on the non-drive side too but as I was replacing the cranks I'm not overly upset.

However, i've still gotta get the bloomin' thing off.

1. Any bright ideas?

2. How difficult is it to saw a crank off ;)

try putting back other crank (well greased) and with the bolt on the other one undone ride round a bit see if that loosens things up.

Heatng might work too

Hi Patrick - thanks for the advice.

I tapped the back of the crack with a wide chisel and it dropped out. With no damage to back of crank. Shame the threads are fubarred.

Note to others and self - Take pedals off before taking cranks off bike. Getting them off afterwards can lead to chainring holes in hands !!!

on hollowtech 2 cranks the drive side has the shaft attached to it. just remove non drive side and push the drive and shaft thru the bearing with your hand. i don't know if hollowtech 1 is the same tho.

I believe hollowtech 1 and 2 are different - hoklowtech 1 being similar to the traditional square taper but fitting onto a splined shaft (octalink) and held in by a bolt. Hollowwtech 2 is as you described.
Fitted a holowtech 2 last tuesday - was suprrised how easy it was!

UPDATE

Well - what a freakin' palaver.

Cranks popped off eventually.

Then came the bottom bracket. Drive side wouldn't budge - and yes I was doing it the right way !!

Non-drive side no probs.

Eventually after swearing I took bike to LBS and said help please.

Nice LBS - Sandy Wallace in Inverkeithing - got big lever and it was loosened first time. (NOTE TO SELF - BUY STUFF FROM HERE THEY ARE NICE PEOPLE AND LBS'S ARE GOOD WHEN IN TROUBLE AND SHOULD BE SUPPORTED)

Got BB out - nasty rusty horrible creaky thing.

Popped new BB in with suitable grease - popped on new Stronglight Impact rings and cranks - popped pedals on - re-adjusted front and rear derailleur - and bob's your mother's brother.

Bike now running beautifully - shame it's pishing with rain.
