OK, I've cocked-up, in a big style. I'd fitted my pedals, the cheap shimano spd-sl ones onto the crank arm (SRAM Apex), one of them was slightly cross-threaded (you see where this is heading?). Meh, the noob me thought - it's on, it's not moving, it's no adverse effect. And I was right. . .

So fast forward a couple of months, and about 250 miles, I'm cycling to work today - taking the long route - when I feel my right heel tapping on the frame, and the whole pedalling motion on the right didn't feel good. I was about halfway, I removed my feet from the pedals and stopped, parked the bike up agains a hedge and gently pulled the pedal off. My heart sank. I tried screwing it back in, my heart just sank even further when I realised quite how buggered it'd become.

I had to get to work so I clipped in and hobbled along, amazingly my average speed was only about 1.5 mph slower than normal!!!

I got to work, obviously having made a bad situation a whole lot worse, the crank arm thread is no more, just a nice smooth shining aluminium, the pedal thread appears to have survived the ordeal.

So now I'm pleading for your helpful advice on my options, please, please, please.

The full crankset - prohibitive through costs, I really don't have a lot of cash, even on payday.
Crank arm only - is this possible?
Could I get it tapped? If so, what size? I assume they're all a standard size. Can I just walk it into an engineering company and expect they'll be able to do it?

Thanks for reading, thanks for not laughing (too hard), and thanks, in advance, for all your lovely words of wisdom.

I'm not expert on cycle specific metal work but in general you would get the crank arm hole drilled and a sleeve insert from the rear that the pedal thread would screw into.

You might get a cheap crank arm/set on eBay.

Which one is boogered?
If it's the left one then look on ebay for something approximately similar.
if the right one, you might be able to get it drilled out and helicoil insert fitted, but that's unlikely to work out much cheaper than a whole brand new crankset.

If you get this done at a general metal fab workshop you should get it done for about £20. It would be about 30 mins work max.

Assuming, depending which side we are discussing, they have a left handed thread tap and helicoil.
Could be worth checking out a few LBS's, even via internet or telephone if not local. -
