County boundary lines challenge

Northumberland to Scottish Borders

View attachment 729710

Great example here

You see the difference in location between the "Welcome to Scotland" sign - and the county welcome sign behind it

well this is due to a legal "funny" thing

The official map defining the county boundary is obviously drawn to scale - and the pen used to draw it has a finite thickness

Hence the country starts at one place and the county starts a few yards later - the difference bing the scaled up thickness of the pen used to define the border on the official map!

I know this to be true as it was explained to me by a Geography teacher - so it must be true!!

(having said which - his wife was sitting next to him at the time and she rolled her eyes quite dramatically when he said it - she was also a Geography teacher!!!)

I went through Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire, Rutland and Leicestershire yesterday. Only saw boundary signs for Cambridgeshire, Rutland (twice) and Leicestershire though.

Hertfordshire today. I didn't spot any opportunity that the sign spoke of though

Did you know that Buckinghamshire was the birthplace of the Paralympics? It was the Stoke Mandeville Games originally

I've now managed 16 - all travelling from home and back. I reckon that's about my limit, as I'm not planning on going any further than 102 miles in a day. I do have a new cycle carrier for the wife's car though...

I also managed to find UK's shortest border:

The border with Lincolnshire to Cambridgeshire begins at Crowland, Market Deeping and Stamford which form the southern boundary of the county with both Peterborough, Rutland and briefly Northamptonshire; the county's border with Northamptonshire is just 20 yards (19 m) long, England's shortest county boundary.

Which is roughly on the left hand side of the picture below :okay:
