Could we sponsor team Nicole Cooke?

Hear me out as, on the face of it, this may seem like a non-starter of an idea, BUT...

Halfords have switched their sponsorship from Cooke to a men's team. Nicole could have signed for a foreign team but she wanted to stay in the UK and work with British girls. So she formed her own team (Vision1 Racing) and is, at present, without sponsor. Maybe we could do something?

Now, it's unrealistic to expect us to stump up enough to be a major sponsor but every little helps. What'chya reckon?

I'm sure Nicole will find a big money sponsor in the near future. I hope so at least!

Btw, I posted this is Café for better coverage.

(Did you know she's only 25! She's been on the scene for so many years you'd think she was older!)

Blimey, you are easily annoyed Maggot.

Most of the interviews with PROFESSIONAL athletes will include a bit of self promotion. Even if it is only a case of blowing their own trumpet to get more lottery funding.

Perhaps if we can aim at a single one-off sum. I don't know. I've no idea what total sum would be a useful amount to a cycling team. A couple of thousand would be a big ask for us and maybe nothing more than a weeks worth of lineament (or whatever) to them!

First we need to establish by means of polls and that
*if enough people would be prepared to participate to make it worthwhile,
*how much individuals would be prepared to 'invest'
*whether or not we want to do it as Cycle Chat (what would be the benefit to cycle chat if we did?) or as a separate group

With a membership of 3000 souls a take up of just 10% multiplied by £25 for example would net £7500. In anyones book a figure not to be sniffed at.

Cooke has a strong independent streak and will not stand for interference in her career. Therefore she has had only tenuous links with British Cycling, they need her more than she needs them!
Good idea to set-up here own team, but unfortunate timing, recession etc. I cannot see her getting any backing in the UK. Any potential sponsor in Britain only sees the track and Pendleton!
No, she will have to go to Italy where her profile is better. Unfortunately any sponsorship from CC would be a drop in the ocean. Call me a pessimist if you must, but I have seen too many false dawns for cycling in the UK!!

And according to her own press release the 1st thing they are looking to fund is a relocation to southern switzerland/north italy. Hardly a uk team, but i dont blame her BC pretty much ignored her and looked pretty sheepish when she won the olympic road race

Just to make it clear, I am NOT suggesting we go signing up for full sponsorship for a few years! No, that IS beyond us!! What I'm thinking is a one-off sum for the new season. I'd happily put forward £200 as I reckon Nicole doesn't get the support she deserves from the UK and it frankly pisses me off.

Maybe this is something for BikeRadar with it's higher profile and larger user base.
