Quite true, but some tyres are far more tougher than others and thus more resilient to such events, ie I have never had a side wall split on Marathons, Marathon Plus's and Bontrager hardcase all weather and their must be lots of other tyres similar. Its virtually a case of deciding whether you want high performance tyres with thin side walls or heavier more durable tyres with all round protection and not just on the thread side.
indeed. I was mainly referring to lightweight road tyres such as a typical 700x23 whihc most people were discussing earlier on this thread. Some are more puncture resistant that others but they all split open if you hit something hard and sharp!

That is true, but some tyres are more robust than others. The Contis I had were some of the most fragile tyres I've ever had on sidewalls; this extremely short life span hasn't occurred with an array of other tyre brands I've had.... Wasn't just me either, but one of my friends. Too much of a coincidence for my liking.

this is a strange thread!
ANY tyre sidewall will split open if you ride over a flint, glass, rock or other sharp hard object. This can happen in the first mile of a ride or after 2000 miles - it makes no difference. I recently met a guy at the side of the road when I had a puncture, and he made a comment like "mine is a brand new bike so I wont get a punture, if I did I'd take it straight back to the shop and complain"!!! WTF.

I had a set of Ultrasports in 27" and they were a joke. Punctured on nearly every ride. Sidewall split at low mileage. Replacement did the same. I would never buy Continental tyres again.

I think tyres are a personal thing as different tyres suit different people.
I ride Conti GP4000s tyres on crap country lanes and glass riddled town roads with no problems.

My front Gatorskin is on 7,000+ miles plus a few more left. If you hit stones hard enough they will do your wheel for you too.In fact that tyre has out lasted my last wheel set (rear), and these ones have had it really (rear), but just can't afford to replace it yet due to the right shifter failing on Sat. thats only lasted 3,000 miles (but it was off ebay) so for a tyre that cost me £18 from Halfords, price per mile is pretty much ok for me. Mine have been wired if that makes a difference or not.

Ultrasports I found bad, but not every ride but usually within 500 miles, never had a puncture on the front gatorskin, and only 2 pinch punctures on the rear, the second bent my rim and took a chunk of rubber off the tyre otherwise it would have still been on, defy an tyre to stand upto that, and even then it ran a few hundred miles without further problem, and I ride 6,000+ miles a year, i wont use anything else at the moment.
