Confusion over Trek models. Need clarification!

Hi all,

Not sure if this is the right place although I am talking about Commuter type bikes. I'm in the market for a 2nd hand commuter/hybrid. Nothing too flash, around £100 or so. I am going to see a Trek 7100fx tonight and the fella reckons it is a 2008 model. Googling it I find there are Trek 7100fx and also Trek 7.1FX. I am bit confused. Did one model supersede the other or are they different models. Which one is better???

I *think* that the 7.1fx is more of a road geometry hybrid while the 7100 is more mountain bikeish - the trek website has full details of all the models.

The 7XXX series has front suspension, the 7.X series does not.

I hate to cloud the issue, but I have a 2005 model 7500FX without front suspension.

Yes it is all a bit confusing, whilst looking myself I came across a site that said the 7100FX came in two versions, one with front suspension and one without.

I seem to remember that up to about 2006 they added FX to the hybrids to denote the rigid fork model, so a 7xxx was front sus, a 7xxx FX was rigid.

Perhaps to sow more confusion they then changed it to 7xxx for the front sus and 7.x FX for the rigid, more road oriented ones.

Or something like that.

This is off the top of my head though, so may be completely wrong!
