Configuring di2 buttons

My new bike has Shimano GRX di2 12 speed with ST-RX825 shifters. I run the latest Wahoo Roam.

I'm very happy with the shifting but enormously frustrated by what I will call the "peripherals." For example the Shimano E-tube app, the manual, the positioning of the rear derailleur function button, constant failure of the app to connect with the bike.

This is an appeal for help, not a rant, my overall opinion of the "system," other than the shifting is that it is extremely poor. This is to the extent I have lost all faith in Shimano as a company.

There are a number of functions I would like to try but the complexity of achieving this and the very poor manuals/reliability of the app mean I have given up on all but two.

Checking battery status. The app fails to connect 75% of the time. I have discovered my Wahoo will show battery status. This issue is resolved. Strange one has to use Wahoo to solve a Shimano issue

Using Hood Function button. On my levers these are on the inside face near the top. I can click them, they exist.

My understanding is these are programmable with one function being to scroll through Wahoo pages. I would like to do this. Two questions:

1. These buttons do not show in the app. Can anyone explain in plain English how to connect these?
2. And then programme these buttons?

Help would be much appreciated. There are many other functions I would like to explore but have decided not to for fear of breaking it.

1) In the Shimano app you mean? Or the Wahoo ELEMNT app? The D-fly buttons cannot be configured in the Wahoo app. In the Shimano app they'll be button/switch 'A' on the shifter settings page.

What you do is make sure they are set to "Ch.1" (or D-fly Ch. 1) for the left button and "Ch.2" for the right button.

That is all. You should then be able to go through the pages on the wahoo using the buttons.

This is what they do:
  • Quick press left hood button to simulate pressing the left front computer button.
  • Quick press right hood button to simulate pressing the right front computer button.
  • Long press left hood button to simulate the up (left) right side computer button.
  • Long press right hood button to simulate the down (right) right side computer button.

You cannot customise the Di2 button functionality on Wahoo devices. A quick press of the Ch.1 button will always simulate the left wahoo button, and a quick press of the Ch.2 button will always similate the right button.

Thank you. I have now got further in 90 minutes than in six weeks. Yes, I meant the Shimano app.

I've been able to identify the switches, previously I thought these were for something else. The switches are definitely Left ch1 and Right Ch 2. This was preset in the Shimano app.

Unfortunately nothing changes on the Wahoo when I click the buttons.

Are you the guy from the excellent better shifting site?

Yep!

The Shimano docs/app/everything aren't great... I know - it's the main reason the site exists :-).

I can probably double-check with my own Wahoo and 12-speed Di2 in a couple of hours, during my lunch break. May have to charge my Bolt first though.

(Also... if you haven't done so yet.. You'll probably have to 'wake up' the shifters/RD first, by shifting the bike once. After that it should automatically connect to the Wahoo and the buttons should function - but yeah.. I'll have a look at my Wahoo in a couple of hours)

There are extra configuration features available on the laptop app. Connect your Di2 charger to your laptop and the bike, and use the Shimano compuyter app to configure your buttons. I had a similar issue with the Bluetooth/phone app when I wanted to duplicate superflous buttons and a shifter so that I can do the same with both hands.

Dont' give up, The setup is sometimes mysterious, but you only have to do it once.

It's a valid suggestion, but (1) you cannot easily connect 12-speed Di2 to a laptop, you need the SM-PCE02 and (2) for 12-speed Di2 the options should be identical for laptop/mobile app, when it comes to setting up shifters
