Cones coming loose

Don't bother with thread lock. The whole thing will be greasy as hell and the threadlock won't cure.

Too late!

I degreased the thread at the appropriate place first though.

I probably gave a bit of a crap explanation in my OP:

I am not aware of the locknuts themselves being loose when I take out the QR (they still take a cone wrench and a 17mm spanner to undo) - but I keep developing a wheel wobble (from the hub, of the type you get when your cones are too loose) every 100 miles. Thinking now, could it be something else?

Bear in mind that I carry quite a lot of heavy stuff in panniers and have to use UK-standard roads....

So the cone and locknut are still tight together when you notice the problem? Bent axle? Worn cups/cones?

Yes, tight together when I start to re-adjust them.

Only 1700 miles.

Axle is visually straight.
Cups and cones appear smooth when degreased.

Obviously over time the cones can come loose. I would've thought this wouldn't be too uncommon for people who carry heavy luggage around all the time and someone would have a wee secret tip for dealing with it?

I had one hub that I decided to change from QR to solid axle. I do know what I am doing with cup/cone bearings and locknuts but this was a complete fooking disaster. Tighten as I might, the cone and locknut would unwind in a few tens of metres of riding. Changed it back to QR and all was well.
Was never able to isolate the cause but it wasnt heavy luggage. My suspicions were a very slight bend in the axle, or some mismatch between cones from one set and cups from another.
